During last April 2, CEDAR participated in the great 1st VU Digital History Datathon (notice the difference with a hackathon). The goal of the day was to sit together with the many people applying Linked Data principles to historical datasets at the VU and its sorroundings, in order to:
- Get a clear picture of the different datasets, and the way they may be linked
- Produce as many links between these datasets as possible
Victor de Boer, with support from Chris Dijkshoorn, Niels Ockeloen and Albert Meroño, organized the day. Victor taught the audience on the basics of RDF linking, while the other participants described their datasets and found meaningful potential links.
At the end of the datathon, the following sets of links where produced:
- 5000+ links from people in the BiographyNet RDF data (+75K famous historical Dutch people) to people in the Rijksmuseum collection RDF data
- 2 links from Dutch Ships and Sailors (historical ships and sailors in the Netherlands) to Rijksmuseum collections
- 61 links from Dutch Ships and Sailors Ranks to CEDAR (Dutch historical censuses as RDF Data Cube) HISCO (Historical International Standard Classification of Occupations) URIs
- 1320 links of CEDAR municipalities to gemeentegeschiedenis.nl municipalities (data-hub of historical data on Dutch municipalities)
- 33 links of ICONCLASS (classification system for cultural content) to HISCO occupations
